Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) PROSPERITY while on patrol at about 10 nautical miles (nm) North East of Dangote Quay on 2 August 2022, sighted a man floating at sea on a yellow 20 litres gallon. Accordingly, the ship altered course towards the position of the man and successfully recovered him. Subsequently, the rescued man revealed that a second person was involved. As such, the ship proceeded to the position of the second man and safely recovered him as well.
Further investigations revealed that the rescued men were Ghanaian fishermen residing at Takwa Bay, Lagos. They went fishing on Sunday 31 July 2022 but encountered a boat mishap at about 10pm same day. Sadly, 2 of them were said to have drowned before the remaining two were rescued by NNS PROSPERITY.
The Nigerian Navy wishes to reiterate its commitment towards ensuring the security and safety of all seafarers in Nigeria’s maritime domain.
The Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral IA Dewu, officially received and celebrated the Communication Team from Eastern Naval Command who came back with trophy as the overall second best in the 2022 Nigerian Navy Annual Communication Competition that took place in Lagos. This great Team of ENC Communications officers and men was coordinated by the Command Communication and Information Technology Officer (CCITO), Commander SR Nweke.
The respective Team members are: SLt JO Ogacheko, SLt ID Ogbonna, PORS Ejovi AS, PORS Ishaya M, LRO Udofia SE, ABROG Commander and SMROG Ihama JO. This Communication Competition covered areas such as semaphore, flashing, flag hoisting, message drafting/handling, fleet work, general communications knowledge, practical communications radio setup, among others. The key objective of this competition is to further drill the NN Communications personnel on the rudiments of naval communications. Naval communications is the fulcrum of naval operations. Naval communication enshrines the transmission of information from reconnaissance and other units in contact with the enemy and the means for exercising command by the transmission of orders and instructions of commanders to their subordinates. As such, it comprises all means of transmitting messages, orders, and reports, both in the field and at sea and between headquarters and distant installations or ships. Naval communication has thus long played an important role in the overall naval operations and warfare.

The International Maritime Conference 2022 featured a meeting of African Naval Chiefs and Maritime Security experts to interrogate and agree on proposed modalities for fulfilling the requirements of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) Communique 1012, in support of the 2050 African Integrated Maritime Strategy.
Essentially, the Conference seeks to look again at the Communique 1012 which was to establish Combined Maritime Task Forces among the navies of the GoG states and those along the Eastern/Southern coastlines as well as a Continental Maritime Advisory Council to be composed of the Heads of Navies and Coast Guards. For this reason, delegates to this year’s conference are not limited to GoG states only but also those of Eastern and Southern African nations.
