HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF FORWARD OPERATING BASE IBAKA
Forward Operating Base Ibaka of the Nigerian Navy is located in Ibaka, Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, near the Nigeria–Cameroon maritime boundary and the Bakassi Peninsula. The base was established on 4 February 1994 to strengthen naval presence and enhance maritime security along Nigeria’s eastern coastal waters.
Since its establishment, FOB Ibaka has conducted maritime patrols, surveillance operations, and law-enforcement activities aimed at combating smuggling, piracy, illegal fishing, and other maritime crimes. Its strategic importance increased after the 2006 Green Tree Agreement, when Nigeria handed over the Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon, making the base vital for monitoring the maritime boundary and protecting Nigeria’s maritime interests.
Today, FOB Ibaka continues to support maritime security operations while also engaging in civil–military cooperation with host communities through safety awareness programmes and humanitarian support, thereby contributing to the Nigerian Navy’s mission of safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial waters in the Gulf of Guinea.
