HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF NIGERIAN NAVY SHIP PATHFINDER
The Nigerian Navy Ship NNS PATHFINDER was established in 1986 as a Type “A” operational naval base to strengthen the Nigerian Navy’s maritime security operations in the Niger Delta Region.
Originally Commissioned as NNS OKEMINI in 1987, the base was relocated from NNS AKASO, to its current site formerly called Horicon Base in Rivers State.
In May 2003, it was formally renamed NNS PATHFINDER, reflecting its expanded mandate and strategic importance. Situated on approximately 180 hectares of land in Rumuolumeni community, Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State, the base occupies a location of immense strategic value. Positioned within the heart of the Niger Delta, NNS PATHFINDER lies in close proximity to critical national assets and multinational oil company facilities. Its area of Operations forms a vital corridor for Nigeria’s blue economy, facilitating maritime trade and offshore energy activities.
In the early 2000s, the Nigerian Navy Introduced aggressive force-renewal and base-restoration strategies aimed at improving Operational efficiency and personnel welfare. During this period, NNS PATHFINDER witnessed significant infrastructural modernization, including the replacement of temporary porta cabin accommodation with permanent housing units and other upgraded facilities. Historically, the Niger Delta region experience militancy, Crude Oil theft, piracy and other security challenges that negatively affected maritime operations and oil production.
Through the combined efforts of NNS PATHFINDER, other security agencies and the Federal Government’s Amnesty programme, incidents of militancy and insecurity in the area were greatly reduced. Today, NNS PATHFINDER plays a vital role in maintaining Maritime security, protecting oil and gas infrastructure, combating illegal maritime activities, ensuring freedom of navigation and contributing to peace and stability within the Niger Delta region and the wider Gulf of Guinea.
Over the 3 decades since its establishment, NNS PATHFINDER has been led by 21 Commanding Officers and 12 Commanders which makes it a total of 33 Senior Officers that commanded the Base. Its Pioneer Commanding Officer was Commander OO Joseph in (1987–1988).
In 2012 the designation was changed from “Commanding Officer” to “Commander” and the pioneer Commander was Commodore OV Fadeyi. While the current Commander, Commodore MI Raji is the 33rd Commander of NNS PATHFINDER. He assumed Command on 13 February 2026.
