HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF NIGERIAN NAVY SECONDARY SCHOOL AKPABUYO
The Nigerian Navy Secondary School (NNSS) Akpabuyo is a co-educational school established under the Directorate of Naval Education to provide welfare support roles. The school is located on the Ikot Offiong Ambai, Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State. It is about 15KM from the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar. The school is 500M from the highway opposite the Nigerian Police Secondary School Akpabuyo. The school was originally planned as a State Model Secondary School until it was handed over to the NN in May 1999 by the Cross River State government headed by Navy Captain C Osondu the then military administrator. The school did not start that year due to logistics and financial challenges. In October 2005 the CNS Vice Admiral GTA Adekeye started the school with the appointment of its pioneer Commandant, Captain A Kpou on 17 Nov 05 and deputy Commandant Lieutenant Commander MA Adetunji.
The objective of establishing the school is to provide for the educational needs of children/wards of Service personnel at a subsidized cost and civilians in the adjoining environment. The school was commissioned on 4 Aug 06 by the then governor of Cross River State Mr Donald Duke. The first student Miss Olorunjuedalo Folami was admitted at 0830 on Sun 26 Sep 06. The school commenced academic activities with 100 students.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF NIGERIAN NAVY SECONDARY SCHOOL BORIKIRI
Nigerian Navy Secondary School (NNSS Borikiri,) is one of the welfare secondary schools owned and managed by the Nigerian Navy. Located in Borikiri, Port Harcourt, the school began academic activities on 13 November 1994 and was commissioned on 9 March 1995 by the then Chief of Naval Staff, Okhai Mike Aghigbe.
The school started with 200 JSS1 students and shared facilities with Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) AKASO until 1996, when the base was relocated and its facilities were transferred to the school. This helped the school expand its infrastructure and academic resources.
Over the years, student enrollment has grown to about 1,200 students, supported by a large team of naval and civilian staff. Since its establishment, the school has been led by 15 Commandants, with the current Commandant being Captain CE Omezurike, who assumed office in February 2024.
NNSS Borikiri combines naval discipline with standard academic education, reflecting its motto “Hard Work and Discipline.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF NOWASS CALABAR
Naval Officers’ Wives Association Secondary School (NOWASS) Calabar was commissioned on 8 May 2015 while academic activities commenced on 28 September 2015 with a total of 47 pioneer students in JSS 1 and JSS 2 as well as17 teaching and non-teaching Staff.
The school which is located in the Nigerian Navy Barracks, Atimbo Calabar, was established to provide secondary education for the children/wards of personnel and civilians in Calabar area and its environs. Since inception the School has provided quality education to its students and has made remarkable achievements within the short period of its establishment.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF NIGERIAN NAVY PRIMARY SCHOOL IKOT ANSA CALABAR
The Nigerian Navy Primary School (NNPS) Calabar was established on the 16 Feb 87 with the promulgation of ENCTM 09/87 by the then Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Commodore SO Aluko. The School is part of the Naval authority’s deliberate effort to fulfil the welfare requirement of her personnel by providing a welfare school that is non-profitable in operation and status.
The School operation and establishment was backed-up by the Cross River State Edict No. 5 part IV section 12 of 1975. There were 127 pioneering pupils drawn from the Navy and host community. The School produced her first graduates in 1991.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF NIGERIAN NAVY PRIMARY SCHOOL (NNPS) BOROKIRI
The Nigerian Navy Primary School (NNPS) Borokiri, Port Harcourt was established on 2 October 1984 as part of the Nigerian Navy’s welfare programme aimed at providing affordable, accessible, and quality primary education for the children of naval personnel, their associates, and members of the host community. The establishment of the school was in line with the Navy’s broader commitment to personnel welfare, recognizing that access to good education for their wards would serve as a strong motivational factor for improved service delivery and dedication among its personnel.
From its inception, NNPS Borokiri has maintained a strong focus on academic excellence, discipline, and character development. The school places high premium on honesty, responsibility, and moral upbringing, ensuring that pupils are not only academically sound but also well-grounded in values that prepare them for future challenges. Over the years, the institution has built a reputation for consistent performance in both academic and extracurricular activities, contributing positively to the educational development within the Port Harcourt area.
Administratively, the school is headed by a naval officer from the Education Branch who serves as the Head Teacher, ensuring that naval standards and discipline are upheld. The Head Teacher is supported by a Finance Officer and three Vice Head Teachers who assist in both academic and administrative functions. Despite some operational constraints over the years, the school has continued to grow, adapt, and effectively fulfill its mandate as a key welfare institution of the Nigerian Navy, serving both naval families and the wider community.
Welfare schools include one military school, two secondary schools and three primary schools in ENC AOR as follows:
- Uyo Area – One military school (Nigerian Navy Military School, Ikot Ntuen).
- Calabar Area – One secondary (NNSS AKPABUYO) and a primary school (NNPS IKOT ANSA, CALABAR).
- Port Harcourt Area – One secondary (NNSS BORIKIRI) and 2 primary schools (NNPS PATHFINDER and NNPS BORIKIRI).
