HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF FORWARD OPERATING BASE BONNY
The Forward Operating Base Bonny was established in December 2005 and is located at Akiama in Bonny Island. Bonny Island lies between Latitude 04°32’N to 04°22’N and Longitude 07°20’E, with a coastline of about 17 nautical miles.
The Base’s Area of Operation (AOO) extends from Latitude 04°32’N to the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and Longitude 06°40.2’E to 07°20’E, covering about 38 nautical miles. Bonny Island hosts important national assets and installations such as Nigeria LNG (NLNG), Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited (RAECL), and ExxonMobil.
The Base plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of these critical national infrastructures.
FOB Bonny is also responsible for maintaining security within the surrounding communities in its Area of Responsibility. The Base therefore contributes significantly to maritime security and protection of Nigeria’s strategic economic assets in the region.
